Tirupati and Tirumala — what’s the difference?
Tirupati is the town at the bottom of the hills, with the railway station and the bus stand. Tirumala is the hilltop town about 22 km up, where the Sri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple stands. Cars go up one ghat road and come down another. The ghat roads are normally closed for a few hours late at night, so plan to go up before midnight.
At the Alipiri checkpoint at the foot of the hills, every vehicle and bag is checked. Alcohol, tobacco and non-vegetarian food are not allowed on the hills.
Darshan tips
- Book Special Entry Darshan tickets or check free Sarva Darshan token availability on the official TTD website well in advance — weekends and festival days sell out.
- Carry the same photo ID used for booking for every person.
- Traditional dress is expected for darshan: dhoti or kurta-pyjama for men, saree or churidar with dupatta for women.
- Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed inside the temple; deposit them at the counters.
- Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and Brahmotsavam days (usually September–October) are the busiest.
Places to visit around Tirupati
- Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, Tiruchanur — about 5 km from Tirupati; devotees visit after Balaji darshan.
- Kapila Theertham — a Shiva temple with a waterfall at the foot of the hills.
- Sri Kalahasti Temple — about 36 km away, famous for Rahu–Ketu pooja.
- Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple — in the heart of Tirupati town.
- Silathoranam and Papavinasam — natural rock arch and a sacred waterfall on Tirumala.
One-day plan from Chennai
- 4:00 am — leave Chennai.
- 7:30 am — reach Tirupati, breakfast, go up the ghat road.
- Morning–afternoon — darshan at your booked slot.
- Afternoon — Padmavathi temple at Tiruchanur, then drive back to Chennai by night.
If you have elderly family members, consider staying one night in Tirupati or Tirumala to avoid a very long day.
