Rameswaram is an island temple town in Ramanathapuram district, about 175 km (3.5–4 hours) from Madurai. Its centre is the Ramanathaswamy Temple — one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and a Char Dham site — famous for its long pillared corridors and 22 sacred wells (theerthams). Do not miss the Pamban Bridge, the ruined town of Dhanushkodi at the island’s tip, and the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial.
Ramanathaswamy Temple
The temple has some of the longest temple corridors in India, lined with hundreds of carved pillars. Pilgrims first bathe in the sea at Agni Theertham, then take a holy bath at the 22 theerthams (wells) inside the temple before darshan. Carry a change of clothes; the temple has places to change.
Places to visit in Rameswaram
- Pamban Bridge — the road bridge over the sea gives a full view of the railway bridge; the new vertical-lift rail bridge opened in 2025.
- Dhanushkodi — about 20 km from the temple, a town destroyed by the 1964 cyclone. The road now runs to Arichal Munai, where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean.
- Dr APJ Abdul Kalam National Memorial at Pei Karumbu, and the Kalam family house museum in town.
- Agni Theertham — the sea in front of the temple.
- Gandhamadhana Parvatham — a small hill with Rama’s footprints and views over the island.
- Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple and the floating stones.
- Kothandaramaswamy Temple — on the way to Dhanushkodi.
