Kodaikanal, the “Princess of Hill Stations”, is in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu at about 2,100 m. Its top sights are Kodai Lake, Coaker’s Walk, Bryant Park, Pillar Rocks, Guna Caves, the Pine Forest and Silver Cascade Falls. The best time to visit is April to June and September to October. The nearest airport is Madurai, about 120 km (3.5 hours) away by road.
Why Kodaikanal
Kodaikanal is quieter and more “misty-forest” than Ooty. The whole town wraps around a star-shaped lake built in 1863, and most viewpoints look down into deep valleys covered in clouds. It is a favourite for honeymooners and for families from Madurai, Coimbatore and Kerala.
Top places to visit in Kodaikanal
- Kodai Lake — boating, cycling or a horse ride around the 5 km lake road.
- Coaker’s Walk — a 1 km paved path along the cliff edge with views of the plains on a clear morning.
- Bryant Park — gardens next to the lake; the summer flower show is held here in May.
- Pillar Rocks — three giant granite pillars rising about 120 m, often half hidden in clouds.
- Guna Caves (Devil’s Kitchen) — deep caves made famous by the film Guna; you see them from a fenced viewing area.
- Pine Forest — tall pines on the way to Guna Caves, great for photos.
- Silver Cascade Falls — on the ghat road about 8 km before town; most taxis stop here on the way up.
- Bear Shola Falls — a short forest walk from town, best after the rains.
- Kurinji Andavar Temple — a Murugan temple with views towards Palani.
- Berijam Lake — a forest lake about 20 km away; entry needs a forest department permit and runs on fixed timings.
