Ooty (Udhagamandalam) is the main hill station of the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu, about 2,240 m above sea level. The must-see places are Ooty Lake, the Government Botanical Garden, the Rose Garden, Doddabetta Peak, the Tea Museum, Pykara Lake and Falls, and nearby Coonoor. The best time to visit is March to June and September to November. The easiest way to reach Ooty is by road from Coimbatore (about 86 km, 3 hours) via Mettupalayam and Coonoor.
Why visit Ooty
Ooty has been South India’s favourite hill holiday since the British built it as a summer retreat in the 1800s. The town sits in rolling hills covered with tea gardens, eucalyptus and pine forests, and even in April the evenings are cool enough for a jacket.
It works for every kind of trip: families with small children, honeymoon couples, school tours and groups of friends. Everything in Ooty town is within 10 km, and Coonoor, Kotagiri and Pykara make easy half-day trips.

- Ooty Lake — a man-made lake from the 1820s with rowing and pedal boats, horse rides and a mini train for kids.
- Government Botanical Garden — 55 acres of terraced lawns, a fossil tree trunk and rare plants. The famous Flower Show is held here every May.
- Rose Garden — one of the largest rose gardens in India, with thousands of varieties on terraced slopes.
- Doddabetta Peak — the highest point of the Nilgiris (about 2,637 m), with a telescope house and views across the hills on a clear day.
- Tea Factory & Tea Museum — see how Nilgiri tea is made and buy fresh tea and homemade chocolates.
- Pine Forest — tall pine trees on a slope between Ooty and Thalaikundha; a favourite spot for photos and film shoots.
- Pykara Lake & Pykara Falls — about 20 km away, with boating on the lake and a short walk to the falls.
- Shooting Point / Wenlock Downs — wide grassy meadows where many films have been shot.
- Avalanche and Emerald Lakes — quieter lakes deeper in the hills; Avalanche is inside a forest area with limited eco-tour access.

Coonoor and Kotagiri — don’t miss them
Coonoor is about 18 km before Ooty on the Mettupalayam road and is quieter and greener. Visit Sim’s Park, Dolphin’s Nose and Lamb’s Rock for valley views, and stop at a tea estate on the way.
Kotagiri, on the other side of the hills, is the oldest of the three hill towns. Kodanad View Point and Catherine Falls are its highlights. A taxi lets you cover Coonoor on the way up and Kotagiri on the way down.
